aganippe was the name of both a fountain and the naiad associated with it. the well is in boeotia, near thespiae, at the base of mount helicon. it was created by the hooves of pegasus and was associated with the muses as a source of poetic inspiration. the nymph is called a daughter of the river-god termessus. the muses are sometimes called aganippicles.

No New Posts Hippocrene Fountain

in greek mythology, hippocrene was the name of a fountain on mt. helicon. it was sacred to the muses and was formed by the hooves of pegasus. its name literally translates as "horse's fountain" and the water was supposed to bring forth poetic inspiration when imbibed.

mount helicon is a mountain in the region of thespiai in boeotia, greece, celebrated in greek mythology. with an elevation of 1,749 meters (5,738 ft), it is located just off the gulf of corinth. in greek mythology, the mountain was celebrated by hesiod because two springs sacred to the muses were located here: the aganippe and the hippocrene, both of which bear "horse" in their toponym.
